183 viewsHow do web push notifications work? The journey of web push notifications begins when you “agree” to receive web push notifications in the top left subscription prompt on a website. When you “agree”, the browser generates the endpoint. This endpoint gets generated with the help of a public key. For the website owners, to send a notification to this endpoint, they need to possess a private key corresponding to the public key. You can think of the public key and the private key as a lock and key. Only the person who possesses the key (private key) can unlock the lock (public key). When web push notifications first kicked off in chrome, GCM used to provide a server API key, similar was the case with FCM but now we have Vapid. Vapid is an agnostic protocol and it is not married to any browser. If a code is written for chrome, the same code will work for Opera, Edge and all other browsers except Safari. Safari doesn’t operate on the concepts of Vapid. In the case of Vapid, any site owner can generate a public key and private key for their domain. The public key gets stored in the browser, and with the aid of private key, notifications are pushed.
